[Beckett's Ridge Buzz]

MARCH 2001
VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1

Welcome to the first ever Beckett’s Ridge Buzz neighborhood newsletter! This newsletter will hopefully become an informative source of neighborhood news and events to which everyone can contribute. This quarterly issue will feature potential columns of interest, but your feedback is essential to making it worthwhile. Please submit your topic ideas. A special E-mail address has been created for your comments upon: brbuzz@nc.rr.com. A very sincere thank you goes to Todd Pendergast of Kennesaw Court for developing our newsletter masthead. Todd is a graphic designer by trade and the masthead looks great!

Beckett’s Ridge Web Site!

One of our very own, Paul Newton, has created a wonderful web site just for our neighborhood. This professionally designed site will not only post the quarterly newsletter, but contain electronic versions of headlines relating to Centex and Beckett’s Ridge, the proposed development at the I-85/NC-86 interchange and other Hillsborough news articles. Other features of the web site include our architectural guidelines and forms to submit for project approval, a member forum for discussing topics related to Beckett’s Ridge, the budget, links to Charleston Management and other web sites and general information about Beckett’s Ridge. The web site address is www.beckettsridge.com Bookmark it! Thanks to Paul for taking the initiative to develop the site and the time to maintain it. Paul is a professional web page designer. Comments about the web site are welcome and may be submitted to webmaster@beckettsridge.com

Centex Update

It is obvious when driving down the street that many homes are going up along the end portion of Beckett’s Ridge Drive and the surrounding streets. Centex reports that the development is approximately 70% sold. Additionally, a new larger tot lot towards the end of Woodbury is now open for use. The bridge for the back entrance is complete and it is expected that the road will open by Summer 2001.

HOA Announcements

The first meeting with Charleston Management Corporation was last December 6, 2000. Discussions included the budget, architectural guideline revisions and issues, neighborhood development status and issues, procedures and feasibility of building a swimming pool and other miscellaneous issues. Several residents are interested in the swimming pool issue. What we were told is that a decent size pool with two bathrooms is around $300,000. In some cases, Centex has donated lots. The HOA would be responsible for handling the rest of the costs. The initial cost for each homeowner, to have the pool and pool house built, would be approximately $1377 per lot. This is based on a cost of $300k for the pool/pool house and 218 homeowners. It is estimated that homeowner’s dues would be raised approximately $15 per month for the minimum size pool and bathrooms. Costs will vary depending on the design. It would be beneficial to find out everyone who is seriously interested in investigating this further. Look for a survey coming soon. The next HOA annual meeting is scheduled for December 2001.

Around Town

This section can highlight city and county news. The web site is currently up to date with the I-85/NC-86 development headlines. Local events can also be mentioned.

Classified

Cleaning out the garage? Post your sale items or announce your garage sale! We are all new here and many of us are first time home buyers so we could use some of this stuff! E-mail a description of your item and contact information to brbuzz@nc.rr.com.

Social Hour Anyone?

The intent of this section is for anyone to announce events where the neighborhood is welcome. This can be anything like a holiday open house, Tupperware to candle parties, bridge club, charity events, etc. Let us know! Please provide your name, address and RSVP number if necessary. Last October the Kennesaw Court people organized a neighborhood block party. Hotdogs, hamburgers and fixings were purchased with HOA funds, Centex provided balloons and everyone brought side dishes and desserts. The turnout was great and we all got to meet each other. We’ll need volunteers and a location for the 2001 party so send your ideas to brbuzz@nc.rr.com.

Many of us are now doing those extra improvements that make a house a home and don’t know where to turn for a dependable resource. Let us know about your experience and provide the details. We will post it here quarterly!

Yard Tip

Water in the early morning (before sunrise) when water pressure is greatest, evaporation is minimal and the lawn drinks in the most water. Do not water in the evening because water will sit on the lawn and may cause disease. Do not water in the heat of the day because the sun will evaporate water before it can soak in. Do not water after rainfall events or during rain as it is wasted.

The Recipe

What newsletter would be complete without the recipe? I’ll start. Here is an easy recipe for a cheese spread called Bar Cheese. It used to be made and sold at a local grocery in Columbus Ohio until 1986 when the store closed.

Bar Cheese
1 bottle (5 oz) prepared horseradish
8 ounces cream cheese
8 ounces shredded white sharp cheddar cheese
½ cup mayonnaise (not salad dressing)

Drain the horseradish well, extracting and reserving as much liquid as possible. Cut the cream cheese into chunks and place into a medium saucepan. Add the cheddar cheese. Melt the cheeses over low heat, stirring frequently to blend (or heat in microwave proof bowl at one minute intervals, stirring in between until melted). Remove from the heat and add the horseradish and mayonnaise. Combine well. Use the reserved liquid to thin the mixture if necessary. Refrigerate for flavors to meld. Serve chilled or at room temperature with crackers or raw vegetables (I recommend Stoned Wheat Thins). Makes about 2¼ cups and keeps for two weeks. Keep refrigerated. Sorry, no nutritional information available.
